On entering the exhibition a screen shows scenes from the series... ... and if you stand in just the right place... ... there you are, in Dr Who. There's a TARDIS, of course... ... and a Cyberman. He moves his arms and head, but of course that doesn't show in a still photo. The chair I'm sorry, but this always reminds me of Frank Thornton :) Laszlo's around in the background somewhere The lighting effects here were good, but hopeless for taking photos The black Dalek Finally I got a picture that almost worked. Ood That is the scariest Father Christmas I've ever seen, and justifies my complete loathing of the character as presented to children every year. The Lazarus chamber Scarecrow. Ye gods, it's *horrible*. Shudder Here are two angels. It's not at all clear which is the more demonic of the two... ;) Thomas stands by Kylie Minogue's costume. If she really wore it, that girl is seriously thin, Yes, I know she's been ill, but even so. Be afraid. Be very afraid. The effect was completely unintentional, but that child walking in front of the Lazarus chamber is even more scary than anything else. Oh my. It's Anne-Droid and Trinn-E K9! Jemima Puddleduck A newspaper - but who's reading it? A rabbit Jemima again Aha! So *that's* who's reading the paper! Oh look, there's the front page... ... really hard to get a decent close-up... ... and I don't think this is much better Peter Rabbit, Benjamin Bunny and er, what's the badger's name? Look at the detail in that kitchen The attention to detail will doubtless be mentioned again - just look at that range I can't recall this story - I'm guessing it's got something to do with a fox and a badger having a spat though :) Piggies! A couple of Squirrel Nutkin's friends Pigling Bland It was just about possible to make out the whole story unfolding here - but difficult to photograph properly These mice are tiny, and hidden behind a perspex window. It made them very hard to see, because it was also quite dark Uh-oh - here's Old Brown in the middle of lunch, and - look up - Squirrel Nutkin, without his tail. Look carefully - it's Mrs Tiggy-Winkle I wonder what they're up to? Mrs Tiggy-Winkle in her kitchen Lucie, on her way out Just look at the detail in that dresser... ... and more here at the range Some birds perched on the roof of Hilltop Here they are again There's a whole wealth of things to see in this display case The Tale Of Two Bad Mice I completely missed this little scene last time I visited the exhibition. Why? Because in order to see it you have to crouch right down and peer through a grille. I wonder how many others missed it? Really, you have to look in every nook and cranny here, just in case. One of several displays on carousels Here's what it looks like half way round Jeremy Fisher, on a carousel on his pond. Look very carefully... ...keep looking carefully... Looking across the Jeremy Fisher's pond it's just possible to make out some tiny characters in the background. We'll come back to that in a bit. Here's Tom Kitten, all trussed up. This is one of many tiny displays let into a wall, way above head-height. Presumably small children can be hoisted on to Daddy's shoulders, but the rest of us just have to guess what we're looking at and hope the photos come out! Potter's books were translated into several languages, as this exhibit shows Even after seeing the photo I'm not entirely sure what this is. It's one of the above-head-height things that I had to hold the camera up to in the hope of getting something. Tom Kitten again? At first I thought it was a rat, but closer examination reveals tabby markings. Thankfully not all of the exhibits were hard to see. We've lived in south Wales since the mid-1980s, and had never heard of Dewstow Gardens, so one warm sunny afternoon we went over to see what we'd missed. One word - WOW! A wonderfully eccentric gentleman (he must surely have been eccentric) had commissioned a garden, complete with odd-shaped ponds and underground grottoes. Filled in during the war so that the land could be used for agriculture, these gardens only came to light within the last however many years when the current owners set about extending the golf course. Can you imagine digging down in your garden and finding odd stairways and tunnels? The 'garden' isn't my idea of a garden of course - it's very 'country estate with parkland'. There are two 18-hole golf courses in the park already, so goodness knows what sort of 'expansion' the owners had in mind. Not that it matters: thankfully, when they realised what they'd got, they set about restoring the gardens and grottoes. It really is the most amazing place, and I'll be adding it to the list of local(ish) places to which visitors should be taken. It's about an hour's drive from here - and definitely well worth paying the entry fee. There's a lot more to see than these photos suggest, but I ran out time to see it all. Next time you visit, let's hope these gardens are open. It was a lovely afternoon, so we went for a cuppa at Terry's snackvan on the A470 This is the one where all the bikers go It really was a gorgeous day On the way back we stopped for a walk in the forest, and found this memorial. There's nothing to indicate to whom or why - it's just there. This little chaffinch was clearing up after customers to the burger van Pen y Fan and Corn Du, from the Rhigos Looking down on Tower Colliery from the Rhigos Mountain road. Until its recent closure Tower was the last remaining deep mine in south Wales Well - what can I say? In all the years we've driven past here we never knew this little oasis existed! Nicholas and Emily quickly made friends The path leads to the top of Pen y Fan, the highest point in south Wales We've really been missing out on a gem, but now we know about it we'll be back Good grief, it's a fish! Ugh, a rather dead fish. They're tiny, but they're happily swimming around in the shallow water in great profusion You Are Here. Possibly. Hard to believe that behind this dark, forbidding bit of forestry there's that beautiful river and 'playground' On the way home we were divebombed by a red kite. It's far from easy taking pictures of birds from a moving vehicle.

]]> Sat Aug 23 2008 80th Birthday Lunch http://frances.fotopic.net/c1441244.html Fran's uncle Colin celebrated his 80th birthday in fine style, at Burnham Sailing Club, Burnham on Crouch, Essex. The Coombs family decided to do the return journey in one day, and very sensibly let the train take the strain. This involved a drive to Lampeter the day before the party, to collect Robert from university, and then getting up at the ungodly hour of 03:00 (urgh) so that we could catch the 04:55 train from Cardiff to Paddington. Seven hours later we arrived at the sailing club, in time to shower and change, take some photos, eat, have fun catching up on family news - and then, in true 'Haynes manual' tradition, reverse the procedure (change, station, 7 hours travelling, sleep) before running Robert back to Lampeter the next day. Are we still more than somewhat tired? Good grief, yes! But we all enjoyed the day, and would do it again. ]]> Fri Sep 7 2007 Front Garden part 3 http://frances.fotopic.net/c1309587.html I've called this collection 'part 3', but in fact it's more like part 5. Still, what's in a name? In an idea world I'd split the other Front Garden collection, but that requires tuits, and those are in short supply. Anyway, I finally got round to putting some bark chippings down around the bit that's going to be a sort of patio. (So naturally, it rained. Sorry!) I think I used 7 x 40 litre sacks of bark, and it quickly became obvious that I'm going to need a heck of a lot more to cover the 'outside' bit of the garden. I'm tempted to see if a sawmill can supply some at cost rather than pay a fortune for nicely bagged up stuff from garden centres, because otherwise the whole project is going to have cost a heck of a lot more than I can sensibly afford. The bit in the middle, where the patio furniture is, is going to have a screed of concrete laid down to more or less (rather less than more probably) level it, and then I'm going to get some Welsh slate aggregate to put on top. At the moment there are flagstones in the middle - I'm undecided whether to keep them or to have them removed completely. I'll probably see what it looks like when I've got the slate down, and then make a decision based on whether or not I think the slate will be firm enough and level enough to support the table. So she came to stay, and we discovered Aberglasney gardens on the Saturday followed by the National Botanic Gardens (a rediscovery, this) on the Sunday. The predicted showers held off for the most part, and the children were well behaved. I know. Unexpected in the extreme! Isn't she beautiful :) I've called her Imp y Celyn, after the Welsh Bard in Terry Pratchett's Soul Music. The only connection really is in the name, but of course she now lives in Wales, and judging by the amount of rain we usually get here this could easily be Llamedos. Celyn is Welsh for holly. In the TV series Red Dwarf the space ship is controlled (for want of a better word) by a computer called Holly. At one point in the series the crew met their counterparts from an alternative universe, and the alternative computer was called Hilly. Hilly, Hillman... OK, the connection is extremely tenuous, but it's the best I could do. Anyway, Imp y Celyn it is, aka Celyn. Love at first sight I'm sure there used to be more storage space than this... ... but somehow with the spare wheel in place it looks awfully small in there Note the thing with the black hose coming off... ...the photo doesn't show it, but the hose is actually rather perished. ]]> Sun May 28 2006 Front Garden http://frances.fotopic.net/c887247.html The original plan was to remove the railings next to the gate; remove the concrete mess atop the stone wall and drive the digger into the garden straight from the trailer over the top of the coping stones on top of the dressed stone. The next stage would have been to excavate behind the wall to relieve pressure on it, removing as much soil and rubbish as was necessary to lower the overall height of the garden by about two foot. It all seemed pretty simple, but... we'd all reckoned without the wall itself, which had other ideas and was determined to have its own way :( So - the whole wall had to come down, displacing the rats who had taken up residence behind it (oh dear, what a shame) and also displacing the shrubbery which was something we'd been hoping to avoid. It was an interesting day, as you can see. A few weeks later, and it dawned on us that if we were going to build a concrete block wall behind the level of the original stone one we would need to have some more of the garden removed. These are the photographs referenced with 'pt2-##'. The gas pipe gave us some heart-stopping moments as the side wall threatened several times to collapse on it (which would have broken it, sending gas everywhere), but in the end the wonderful men from Orchard succeeded in removing everything above the original level of the land sans mishap. Now all we have to do is to tidy and clean up the house, so that we can have a sheddi wallmolishingmoot... Fit the third - photos referenced pt3-##: Eventually we gave in and commissioned Dave-from-across-the-valley to build a proper wall for us. We decided we'd have it in ordinary concrete block, with a straightforward render to hide the concrete blockedness. Some nice new red bricks would be used for the pillars, and the original name brick and coping stones would be put back where they belong. Once work started it didn't take long. This turned out to be just as well, because Dave-from-etc had only just finished the work when it snowed. And boy, did it snow. Schools were closed for two days and roads were impassable. Of course, this being the UK the snow cleared almost as fast as it had come... There was a gap of nothing much happening, and then fit the fourth happened. Fran decided she wanted a garden. So, off to the appropriate place for some of that semi-permeable membrane to cover the expanse of mud in front of the house. Fran also bought a trio of cherry trees (vertical twigs) and some other stuff, including some bark chips. Sooner or later it is hoped that a garden will rise, phoenix-like from the uneven pile of mud... Ooh lookee, we've got our very own landfill! OK, so this clearly isn't the front garden. It's the reason the immersion heater stopped working. For all I know the cylinder and heater are fine and could have stood another few decades of use, but just look at that wiring! Sheesh! Just before this was taken the trailer was in front of where the wall now isn't. With the trailer parked inches away from the wall, it was the only thing holding the wall up after the combination of the weight of the excavator and the vibration produced by same made the centre rows of dressed stone collapse toward the pavement... ... which in turn meant that the whole lot would have to come down. Eeep! It's suddenly a lot lighter going up the path though View up the road Oh my. It looks very bare now Hello house! The pillar didn't put up any resistance at all for some reason And now we can see just what was inside the concrete mess. Well, not a lot actually. No wonder it was starting to fall down. We were determined to save the house name plate (the white brick in the pillar) Please don't damage the name plate! View from across the road Gently does it... Those coping stones are enormous and weigh - if not a ton - then lots. The name plate was saved! The following day we were able to survey the land properly... ... well, when I say 'properly'... ... I mean we looked at it. Interesting reflections here - wonder what they are? Oh my. Charlie's more or less vertical; therefore that wall - isn't. And just look what it's (not) made of! Oh yes, that thing at the bottom, by Charlie's feet? It's the main gas pipe leading to the house. Oh joy :-( A few weeks later, and back with the excavator... ...much to the delight of the children A fair bit was removed from the front... ...so we should be able to build a concrete block wall behind the level of the original stone one. Cor! Mind that pipe!
